In Mann's version, Lawrence-who was at the height of her fame in 1910, but by the late '30s had faded into oblivion-and a besotted physician-fan use the suicide of Lawrence's housemate as a ruse to allow Lawrence to disappear gracefully from an industry that no longer wants or cares about her. The real silent film actress Lawrence committed suicide in 1938 by drinking ant poison. The birth of the film industry and the advent of the world's first film star, Florence Lawrence, the original ""Biograph Girl,"" form the basis of this fictionalized account of one woman's life in a burgeoning industry that changed the parameters of entertainment. ![]()

Their deaths, while tragic, were not in vain industry reforms resulted, particularly in the area of worker safety. The fire that swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on a March afternoon in 1911 killed 146 people, mostly young immigrant women. “Triangle: The Fire That Changed America,” by David von Drohle. Winner of a Minnesota Book Award and an American Book Award. Part memoir, part history, the book explores the lives of strikers, managers and strikebreakers and the repercussions for the town. Many people have told me that they find Proulx difficult and hard going but I found her quite the opposite. MajorWhipple too had worries about the pace, saying: "It's a terrific work although the pace might not suit everyone." Although he went on to note: "For me it was the perfect marriage of style and setting. ![]() It's worth sticking with it as the description of a bleak Newfoundland winter and the emergence of the key characters is beautifully done. I found it really hard work and it took me ages to really get into it. Shavedlegs wrote: "I agree with the comments about her writing style. Even many of those that like the book seem to find it difficult.
